H. Frank Carey has named Class of 2017 salutatorian Eric Jiang and senior Maria Papas as Seniors of the Month for February.
Eric is an exceptionally intelligent young man who has made a substantial impact at Carey. His academic prowess has been recognized by inductions into the National, Science, Foreign Language, Math, English and Music honor societies. This role model and leader is president of Mathletes, vice president of National Honor Society, vice president of Tri-M Honor Society and historian of the Red Cross club. Additionally, he is a member of the Asian Association, runs on the varsity track team and tutors younger students at school. This AP Scholar with Honors student is also an incredible musician and a vital part of the school’s music program. He plays the clarinet and piano and has achieved many distinctions through the New York State School Music Association, as well as through school and districtwide ensembles. This talented young man makes time to volunteer at the newly created Washington Street School ESL program and has been a fixture at their summer recreation program the last three summers. This amazing achiever will attend MIT in the fall. Congratulations Eric!
Spirited, talented and unwaveringly dedicated, are words that describe Maria Papas. A committed athlete, this senior is captain of the varsity girls’ soccer team, a member of varsity track and was captain of last year’s Junior/Senior Challenge Team. She can often be seen “in disguise” at Carey sporting events promoting school spirit and raising the energy level of the crowd. Additionally, she is sports editor of the Log, a community service volunteer at St. Paul’s Cathedral, and has been inducted into the National, World Language and Art honor societies. She is respected by the faculty, the administration and her peers as evidenced by her being crowned this year’s homecoming queen. She will attend SUNY Geneseo in the fall where she plans to pursue a major in education. Congratulations Maria!
