Seven Sewanhaka High School students participated in the fifth annual Junior Iron Chef on Long Island, which was coordinated by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County and Lake Grove Whole Foods Market.
Middle and high school-aged student teams competed in a one-day cooking challenge to be the top Junior Iron Chefs. Teams were encouraged to include local ingredients in their recipes and at least two USDA ingredients that are used in school cafeterias.
Recipes were reviewed and tasted by qualified judges and based on the following criteria: taste, presentation, creativity, use of local/ USDA ingredients, and if the recipe could easily be implemented into school cafeterias; consideration of price of ingredients, difficulty of preparation and availability of ingredients. Congratulations to all the students!
