Board of Ed Appoints New Elmont AP

During its October meeting, the Board of Education appointed Dayna Sotirhos as Elmont Memorial’s new assistant principal effective Oct. 26.

Sotirhos, a Floral Park resident, has been an English teacher at Elmont Memorial since September 2004. During her tenure, she spent one year as the English department’s assistant chairperson, before being promoted as English and library chairperson in 2011. In addition, she has served as the school’s newspaper adviser and as coach of the varsity girls soccer and junior high track teams.

Prior to her time at Elmont, Sotirhos was an English teacher at Franklin D. Roosevelt High School in Brooklyn from 2002-2004. From 2008-2009, while working at Elmont, she was also an adjunct professor at Adelphi University. She holds a Bachelor of Science from New York University, a Master of Arts from Brooklyn College, and a master’s in administration and technology from Adelphi University.

“We are incredibly excited to have Dayna as the next assistant principal at Elmont Memorial High School,” Principal Kevin Dougherty said. “Dayna possesses a tireless work ethic and has dedicated the last 12 years of her life to the students and families of our school. Through it all, she has not only built outstanding relationships within the community, but she has also achieved tremendous academic results by setting high expectations, holding students accountable and providing the necessary supports for students to be successful.”
